Audi has unveiled its new-generation A6 Avant, designed to rival the BMW 5 Series Touring and Mercedes E-Class Estate. This combustion-engine-powered model combines bold styling with cutting-edge technology, promising an exceptional driving experience.
Initially, Audi considered naming this model the A7 Avant to distinguish it from the electric A6 e-tron. However, the company ultimately decided to retain the classic A6 name. With its streamlined design, the new A6 Avant is now the most aerodynamic combustion-engine vehicle in its class, boasting a drag coefficient of 0.25 Cd. Notably, the only Audi wagon with better aerodynamics is the A6 e-tron Avant.
Key aerodynamic enhancements include air control elements, active air intakes, a prominent rear diffuser, and a rear spoiler. The new A6 Avant is also 60 mm longer than its predecessor, measuring 4,990 mm in length.
Enhanced Design and Technology
In addition to improved efficiency, the redesigned A6 Avant offers a more striking appearance with sculpted rear sections and aggressive LED lights featuring digital lighting technology. The front end bears a strong resemblance to the A5, and the vehicle is built on the PPC platform, which debuted with the A5 lineup last year.
This platform supports an optional adaptive air suspension system, designed to balance sportiness with comfort by adjusting ride height and shock absorption. The A6 Avant can also be equipped with all-wheel steering and a Quattro sport differential in AWD models for enhanced handling.
Spacious Interior with Advanced Features
The cabin is packed with advanced technology, including a digital cockpit featuring up to three displays, a panoramic sunroof, and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system for an immersive audio experience.
Engine Options and Performance
In line with Volkswagen Group’s renewed commitment to combustion engines, the new A6 Avant offers a range of gasoline and diesel options:
- 2.0 TFSI (gasoline) producing 201 hp
- 2.0 TDI (diesel) producing 201 hp
- 3.0 TFSI V6 (gasoline) delivering 362 hp
All engines feature a mild-hybrid (MHEV Plus) system that includes a 48V battery, a starter generator, and an integrated motor/generator. This setup adds 24 hp and 230 Nm of torque during full acceleration and recovers energy during braking. Audi claims the A6 Avant can run on electric power alone during low-speed maneuvers like parking or navigating city traffic.
Future Variants and Pricing
While Audi has yet to announce additional powertrain options, plug-in hybrid versions of the A6 are expected. The performance-focused RS6 Avant will also return, potentially shifting from a V8 to a hybrid V6 powertrain.
Audi has begun accepting orders for the new A6 Avant in Europe. In Germany, the base model with a mild-hybrid gasoline engine starts at €58,000 (approximately $61,200), which is €1,900 (about $2,000) less than the previous A6 Avant. The first deliveries are scheduled for the end of May.
